Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL) **What is it?** Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL) is a standardized test supervised by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

TORFL is aimed at evaluating non-native speaker’s command of Russian as a foreign language. The test has six levels, conforming to schema of the Association of Language Testers in Europe, and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Upon successful passing of the testing an internationally recognised certificate is issued.

LEVEL DISCRIPTION OF THE COMPETENCES THE AIM OF THE CERTIFICATE COST
Elementary level (A1) Certificate in TORFL Elementary (A 1) confirms that you can be successful in simplest communicative needs for social, welfare and educational and professional spheres of communication according the standard of Russian as a foreign language. The elementary competence in Russian as a foreign language is not enough to study at the Russian educational institutions. 5700 RUR
Basic level (A 2) Certificate in TORFL Basic (A 2) confirms that you can be successful in simplest social and cultural communication. You can do shopping, ask directions in the street, use local public transport, discuss weather with people around, exchange some stock phrases with group mates and teachers, etc. Minimum number of vocabulary items 1 300. Minimum classes to prepare for the test 100. The basic competence in Russian as a foreign language **is not enough to study at the Russian educational institutions**, except for preparatory faculties (programs or courses) for foreigners where future students receive a one-year special language training. 6000 RUR
Certification Level 1 (B 1) Confirms that you are able to succeed in everyday, educational and professional communication. You feel more confident in most everyday situations and can handle a significant number of problems and tasks you have to face. TORFL 1 Certificate gives international applicants access to Russian higher education. However if you choose to continue your education in college, you will have to complete an extra section which will test your abilities to achieve minimum communicative objectives in the student’s area of professional/academic communication. Minimum number of vocabulary items 2 300 Minimum classes to prepare for the test 90 The first level of competence in Russian as a foreign language is enough to enter Russian education institutions, in particular higher education institutions, i.e. universities, institutes and academies. As a rule, this level is achieved by students who have completed the preparatory programs (faculties or courses) for foreigners after one-year special language training. 6000 RUR
Certification Level 2 (B 2) Confirms a relatively high level of communicative competence in all communicative contexts. At this level you will be able to apply for graduate studies in Russia and conduct professional activity in Russian in such areas as Humanities (except for Linguistics), Engineering, Technology, and Natural Sciences. Minimum number of vocabulary items 10 000. Minimum classes to prepare for the test 140. The second level of competence in Russian as a foreign language is a prerequisite for receiving bachelor's or master's degrees at the Russian higher education institutions (except for bachelor's or master's degree in philology). 6300 RUR
Certification Level 3 (C 1) You have a high level of language command in all communicative contexts, which allows you to conduct language-related professional activity in Russian (e.g. Linguistics, Translation, Editing, Journalism, International Relations, Business Management). Minimum number of vocabulary items 12 000.Minimum classes to prepare for the test 140. This Certificate is a prerequisite for receiving a bachelor's degree in philology at the Russian higher education institutions.i] 6500 RUR
Certification Level 4 (C 2) Your Russia language command is close to educated native speaker knowledge of the language. TORFL 4 Certificate gives opportunity to apply for post-graduate studies. This level enables you to work as a linguist and a teacher of Russian as a foreign language. Minimum number of vocabulary items 20 000. Minimum classes to prepare for the test varies in every single case. This certificate is a prerequisite for receiving a master's degree in philology at the Russian higher education institutions that entitles to every kind of teaching or scientific activities in the area of the Russian language.. 6500 RUR
