September 1st is celebrated as the Day of Knowledge in Russia and CIS countries. Back in 1935 This day was officially announced as the start day of a new academic year in all schools, universities and other educational institutions. Since 1986 it also got the status of a national holiday.
At secondary schools they traditionally hold celebratory assemblies on September 1st with first-graders in the spotlight of the ceremony. Universities do without assemblies but celebrate in other nonetheless solemn ways.
